Chitral Valley is one of the very few places in the world which offers exotic cultural retreats as well as stunning mountain sceneries. Deep inside the mighty Hindu Kush range (which has 40 peaks above 6,000m, including Tirich Mir (7,726m) the highest peak of Hindu Kush), Chitral Valley is beaming with culture and heritage. You will visit the famous Kalash Valley and experience first-hand the culture and rituals of the people of Kalash, who are descendants of the five lost soldiers of the army of Alexander the Great and are well-known for their own religious beleifs, identity, way of life and language.

We will visit the serene Shandur Pass (3,700m), often known as the ‘Roof of the World’ due to its massive lush green plateau. Shandur Pass is also home to the wolrd’s highest Polo Ground, where the Shandur Polo Festival takes place in July every year. Camping overnight at Shandur Pass will surely be an unforgettable experience!

However, this tour still has much more to offer. Hunza Valley is one of the most incredible and stunning places to visit not only in Pakistan, but anywhere in the world. Hunza Valley is known as the earthly paradise, and is the inspiration behind Shagri La in James Hilton’s book ‘Lost Horizon’. Duikar Top in Hunza Valley offers some incredible panoramic view of five +7,000m peaks – Rakaposhi (7,788m), Ultar (7,388m), Diran Peak (7,266m) and Spantik (7,027m). Perhaps this is the only such place in the world! Hunza Valley is also very rich in culture. It is home to 600 year old forts of Altit and Baltit. A legend exists, common to many parts of the western Himalaya, that the Hunzakuts (as the people of Hunza are known), are the descendants of the five lost soldiers of the army of Alexander the Great.

We will visit Pakistan-China border at Khunjerab Pass (4,693m), which is the world’s highest paved international border crossing and also the highest point on Karakoram Highway. Other attractions include the shimmering Attabad Lake, Hussaini Suspension Bridge, Passu Cones (6,106m), the hanging Passu Glacier and the mighty Batura Glacier.

Hunza Valley is truly an earthly heaven. Describing it as nature at its very best would not be wrong. Travelling to Hunza Valley will fascinate you to your very core.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrive at Islamabad

  • Arrival at Islamabad.
  • You will be received by the group leader and/or guide.
  • Transfer to centrally located hotel.
  • Tour briefing with group leader at the hotel.
  • Sightseeing of Islamabad in the evening.
  • Enjoy an outstanding dinner at Monal Restaurant, which is situated in Margalla Hills and offers spectacular views of the city.
  • Overnight stay at centrally located hotel.

Day 2 – Drive to Chitral Valley (Pakistani Tourists will join on this Day)

  • Leave early in the morning on private air-conditioned coach (or van). You will pass through Malakand, Lower Dir, Upper Dir and many small towns and villages on the way towards Chitral Valley.
  • Experience splendid mountain scenery all the way to Chitral Valley.
  • Soon after Upper Dir, we will cross the Lowari tunnel, which bypasses the old Lowari Pass (3,118m). The crossing of Lowari Pass (3,118m) used to be an experience in itself, offering some out-of-the-world views. However, using the tunnel will considerably reduce the journey time.
  • Chitral is a beautiful place – situated on Chitral River and surrounded by mighty Hindu Kush range.

Day 3 – Visit the famous Kalash Valley

  • Leave early in the morning for Kalash Valley.
  • The Kalasha (as the people of Kalash Valley are known) are the descendants of the five lost soldiers of the army of Alexander the Great. They have their own religious beliefs, along with their own identity, way of life and language. The Kalasha are well-known for their unique and well-preserved culture, which has led to them being listed by UNESCO for consideration as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.
  • We will visit the beautiful villages of Bumboret, Rumber and Birir, the three villages that make up the Kalash Valley.
  • We will meet the local people of Kalash Valley and learn about their fascinating culture and rituals. We will also visit the Kalasha graveyard and museum to learn more about these indigenous people.
  • Overnight stay at hotel.

Day 4 – Sightseeing in Chitral Valley

  • Today we will have sightseeing in Chitral Valley.
  • We will start the day by visiting the historic Chitral Fort, which was built in 14th Then we will visit the beautiful Shahi Mosque, followed by Chitral Museum and the old Chitral Bazaar (Market).
  • In the afternoon, we will visit Chitral Gol National Park for some majestic views of the Chitral Valley.
  • Overnight stay at hotel.

Day 5 – Drive to Shandur Pass

  • We will leave early in the morning for Shandur Pass (3,700m) (often called Roof of the World), passing through the picturesque Jenali Koch, Booni and Mastuj villages.
  • We will pass the shimmering Shandur Lake on the way towards Shandur Pass.
  • There is a famous Polo Ground situated at Shandur Pass, where the Shandur Polo Festival takes place in July every year. This is the highest Polo ground in the world. Visiting this famous festival should be on everyone’s bucket-list!
  • Shandur Pass is a massive lush green plateau full of small streams during summer. Camping here will surely be an unforgettable experience!
  • Overnight stay at fully serviced wilderness campsite.

Day 6 – Drive to Hunza Valley

  • After absorbing the stunning panoramic views from Shandur Pass, and appreciating the beauty of the area, we will make our way towards Hunza.
  • We will pass through the picturesque valleys of Phandar, Gupis and Gahkuch.
  • Road from Shandur Pass to Hunza passes through some incredible mountains and valleys, providing out-of-the-world views throughout the way. We will stop at various points for some landscape photography.
  • Visit the local Bazaar (market) of Karimabad in the evening and enjoy the hospitality of locals.
  • Overnight stay at hotel.

Day 7 – Drive to Khunejrab Pass and then Drive back to Passu

  • Leave early in the morning for Khunjerab Pass (4,693m) via Karakoram Highway
  • We will pass the magical emerald blue colored Attabad Lake on the way to Khunjerab Pass. Attabad Lake was formed in 2010 due to a massive landslide 10km upstream of Karimabad over the Hunza River. (You will stopover at Attabad Lake the next day)
  • We will see the magnificent Passu Cones, or locally known as Tupopdan (6,106m).
  • We will be mesmerized by the sights of hanging Passu Glacier and the mighty Batura Glacier (which is 57km in length, and one of the longest glaciers outside polar-regions).
  • We will pass the beautiful towns on Gulmit and Sost, where the locals will greet us with big smiles.
  • We will enjoy the afternoon at Pakistan-China border at Khunjerab Pass (4,693m), which is the world’s highest paved international border crossing and also the highest point on Karakoram Highway.
  • We will travel back to the hotel in Passu, from where you will have outstanding views of Passu Glacier and Passu Cones.
  • Overnight stay at hotel in Passu.

Day 8 – Drive to Karimabad, Hunza Valley

  • We will leave early in the morning for Karimabad, Hunza Valley.
  • We will stop at the shimmering Attabad Lake for jet-skiing and/or boating for an unforgettable experience of such an excursion in the midst of jagged peaks.
  • We will then visit the Hussaini Suspension Bridge, which is a wonder in itself. It is one of the longest walking suspension bridges in the world, crossing the Hunza River delta.
  • Visit the local bazaar (market) of Karimabad in the evening and enjoy the hospitality of locals.
  • Overnight stay at hotel.

Day 9 – Sightseeing Day in Hunza Valley

  • Hunza valley is outstandingly beautiful and there is plenty to see. A legend exists, common to many parts of the western Himalaya, that the Hunzakuts (as the people of Hunza are known), are the descendants of the five lost soldiers of the army of Alexander the Great.
  • We will visit the 600 year old forts of Baltit and Altit. Baltit fort is a marvelous piece of architecture with 53 rooms on 3 storeys. Altit for 100 years older, and is even more impressive.
  • The markets of Karimabad are always worth a look round and don’t forget to try the amazing local apricots.
  • From Hunza valley, there are some spectacular views of Lady Finger (6,000m). In the evening, we will head to Duikar Top (known as Heaven on Earth) from where we will have panoramic view of the entire Hunza valley and five +7,000m peaks – Rakaposhi (7,788m), Ultar (7,388m), Diran Peak (7,266m) and Spantik (7,027m).
  • Time permitting, we will also visit the marvelous Hopper Glacier, which is amongst one of the fastest moving glaciers in the region.

Day 10 – Drive to Chilas

  • Leave early in the morning for Chilas via Karakoram Highway.
  • Witness some of the most majestic mountain sceneries anywhere in the world along the Karakoram Highway, which is rightly known as the 8th wonder of the world.
  • We will also see the confluence point of three mighty mountain ranges (i.e. Karakoram, Himalaya and Hindu Kush).
  • We will enjoy some spectacular views of Nanga Parbat (8,126m) and Rakaposhi (7,788m).
  • Overnight stay at hotel.

Day 11 – Drive to Islamabad (Tour Ends for Pakistani Tourists on this Day)

  • Leave early in the morning on private air-conditioned coach (or van) for Islamabad via Karakoram Highway or Naran Valley (depending on the situation of Babusar Pass)
  • The Karakoram Highway follows the Indus River, cutting through steep gorges and offering some spectacular scenery all the way to Chilas. On the other hand, the Naran Valley route follows Kunhar River, passing through lush green valleys and offering some marvelous mountain scenery. The crossing of Babusar Pass (4,173m) is an experience in itself, offering some out-of-the-world views.
  • Overnight stay at centrally located hotel.
